Horizontal bar multi-line stair and balcony aluminum railing system

Features

    • Aluminum:
We primarily use aluminum for the bulk of the railing, including all posts, frames, and handrails, as well as infill section bars if applicable.
A variety of different treatment and coating finish options are available that greatly improve the characteristics of the material and change its appearance as desired.

    • Stainless steel cables:
Used for cable railings infill due to their strength, toughness, stiffness, durability, and suitability for all weather conditions. Least likely to bend or sag under tension making them the preferred option, allowing for a safe and open viewing space.

    • Laminated glass panels:
Multi-layered glass with thin polymer layers in-between.
Ensuring superb strength and structural integrity, in accordance with relevant safety and load-bearing standards.

  • The coating works differently from conventional paint finishes because it binds with the metal itself (and can be up to several millimeters thick), rather than simply just adding a layer on top. Although it has a higher cost upfront, it lasts longer and provides greater protection from mechanical damage.

    • Corrosion resistance: On top of aluminum’s naturally high resistance to corrosion, powder coating provides an additional layer of protection that increases durability and lifespan. Highly effective against salt, dirt, chemical pollutants, and humidity.

    • Enhanced mechanical properties: The coating further increases the metal surface’s resistance to physical impact, including scratches, chipping, and denting.

    • Improved visual appearance: We have various powder coating finishes available for our railings. These are available in different colors or textures, some of which mimic the appearance of other metals, or materials like wood.

  • We offer an option to add Kynar – a premium PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) coating finish to your aluminum, which is a type of high-performance thermoplastic polymer that is extremely non-reactive and offers excellent resistance to various forms of degradation and weathering. Known for lasting decades and greatly improves the lifespan of the metal surface.

Recommended for exterior installations, particularly areas where long periods of sun exposure are expected, as well as coastal locations – especially if using a more bright or vibrant color for your railings that needs to be protected from fading.

One of Kynar’s biggest advantages is highly enhanced UV resistance, which shields the pigment inside and prevents fading and chalking of the surface over long periods of time, therefore significantly reducing upkeep – a common concern for architectural metal manufacture.

    Other benefits:

    • Excellent resistance to salt and humidity.

    • Lower VOC content for water based Kynar formulations: Less environmental impact due to off-gassing of volatile compounds compared to organic solvent based formulations and other polymer based coatings and conventional paints.

    • Highly inert material – resistant to chemical solvents and pollutants.

    • Provides abrasion resistance, although typically less so compared to other coatings.

  • Aluminum has many advantages compared to other metals that make it extremely desirable, which is why many architectural contractors have made a large shift towards aluminum as the primary metal of choice.

    • High strength-to-weight ratio: Aluminum is a light weight metal but it doesn’t compromise on structural integrity and can handle significant loads despite being lighter. Although other metals like steel have higher load-bearing capacity overall, aluminum scores better relative to its weight.

    • Resistance to corrosion and degradation: Aluminum is not prone to rusting and naturally forms an oxide layer on the surface upon exposure to air, meaning it has its own protective layer by default even without treatment.
A key factor for exterior applications, particularly environments where large amounts of weathering are expected.

    • Low cost: Aluminum is a relatively low-cost material, especially when taking into account its durability and long lifespan – even further improved upon in the long term by additional treatment options. When combined with the other advantages of the material, it becomes a very economical choice.

    • Malleability and ductility: Highly customizable profiles. Aluminum is very malleable and provides plenty of versatility in terms of design options. The metal is easily extruded and shaped into thin layers, bars, or pieces, allowing for various ornate structures and intricate designs.

    • Very low maintenance: Aluminum railings are very easy to maintain in good condition which makes them particularly desirable, lasting decades and maintaining their color and fresh appearance with minimal upkeep.
The application of additional treatment methods further improves upon its natural properties and our railings are specifically built to withstand all forms of weathering.

Undecided about your installation? We can discuss your project’s requirements in more detail and help provide you with the most appropriate solution for your situation.

Some factors to consider:

  • An important factor to take into account – a railing is an integral component of the structure as a whole and certain types of railing and material are more compatible with specific types of structures, and may not work well with others at all.

Older structures or projects aiming to achieve a more classy look are likely to benefit the most from ornate features or traditional picket style railings, whereas glass panels and horizontal multi-line bars typically better complement more modern homes, offices, and architectural projects.

Metal Tek fabricates premium custom designs, making sure that every project fits smoothly, improves upon, and integrates well into the architectural context – whether it be a high-end luxury design or through a more sleek and minimalist implementation.

  • This may include geographic location, climatic factors, immediate surroundings of the area, as well as the type and purpose of the building itself.

For example, commercial projects involving public venues, seating spaces, and crowded areas may expect a significant degree of neglect and require more rigorous specifications in terms of load capacity, sturdy designs, durability, and resistance to physical damage, impact, or scratching.

Our railings are also built to withstand the full spectrum of Florida’s hot and humid weather, and sun exposure.

For exterior installations, especially seaside ones with with exposure to salt and long hours of sunshine, it is of particular importance to ensure a build that is resistant to weathering, fading, and degradation. Additional metal treatment options may be an appropriate solution for some of our clients.

  • Certain styles of railing may offer more peace of mind due to additional safety benefits. Families with small children or pets, for example may want to opt for railings that offer additional climbing prevention, as well as smaller gaps to prevent injury or getting stuck.

The use of classic vertical railing styles is one solution, as well as sturdier designs and using more narrow spacing between bars.

There may also be specific minimum guard rail height requirements to take into account.

  • For some projects, visibility and clear sight-lines may be a priority, depending on the purpose of the building or structure in place, such as observation decks, balconies, or certain public seating spaces.

In those cases, a glass infill section allows full visibility, however other considerations may also need to be taken into account, such as airflow and potentially requiring requiring regular cleaning.

Other common considerations include using cables as infill, or certain styles of horizontally oriented multi-line railings, particularly utilizing thinner bars, that don’t tend to noticeably block the view.

Aluminum railings can be shaped into relatively thin bars and pieces of metal while maintaining a safe and sturdy structure – without significantly obscuring the view.

  • Different kinds of railing greatly differ in the amount of, and type of maintenance required, so this is an important factor to consider when deciding on an installation.

Glass panels may need more regular cleaning and cables may need re-tensioning.
One of the main advantages of aluminum however, is its ease of cleaning and very low maintenance requirements.
It is the primary material we use for all of our railing fabrications at Metal Tek, including the frames, posts, pickets, and top rails.

  • Certain designs require a more complex fabrication and installation process and use higher cost material. Oftentimes going for standard and simple styles is the wisest option if budget is a limitation.

We can help you see what your options are based on budget, taking into account your specifications, and any project constraints.

  • A noteworthy and often overlooked feature of glass panels is their sheltering effect which may be a relevant consideration in certain situations.
This includes acting as a windbreak and providing a barrier against precipitation, noise, debris and pollutants, while at the same time allowing full natural light to come through.

Some picket railings may also provide a small degree of sheltering, particularly when using thicker balusters.
